Namsangol Hanok Village

Namsangol Hanok Village has many traditional programs and activities to participate in. Traditional programs, such as, wearing hanbok, folding hanji (traditional Korean paper), writing in Korean, traditional tea ceremony, tradtional etiquette school and herbal medicine experience.

 There are also taekwondo performaces and other various performances around the village. You can also try tradtional games such as yutnori (traditional board game).

 You can also tour around with a tour guide that can give helpful information about the history.

Gijisi Juldarigi Festival

Gijisi Juldarigi is the main feature of this 500-year traditional folk festival, not like festivals developed on purpose by local governments. Juldarigi, a tug-of-war game, was started to pray for peace and fortune in the new year and to be in concord with neighbors as part of a traditional village’s feast.

In 1982, Gijisi Juldarigi was designated as Important Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 75, one of Korea’s representative Intangible Cultural Heritages. Also, it was registered in 2015 as Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO along with Vietnam, Cambodia and the Philippines.

Jeongseon Arirang Performance

Jeongseon Arirang Performance is a dramatized version of Jeongseon Ariang, the origin of the Korean folk song Arirang designated as Intangible Cultural Asset No. 1 of Gangwon province.

This performance with Korea’s characteristic composition is meaningful in that it introduces the artistic superiority of the folk song and Korean traditional culture to not only domestic but also foreign tourists. “Jeongseon Arirang Performance,” which started in 1999 and was selected as Standing Cultural Tourism Program in 2000, has a long history.

In particular, “Pan-Arirang” which began to be performed in 2015 sings joys and sorrows of the Korean people satirically and humorously, resonating with the audience. The performance will grow as a global cultural content through the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and contribute to the globalization of Jeongseon Arirang.

Hwaseong Haenggung Performance is a representative event for Suwon, South Korea held on Saturdays from April to October in the area of Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site.

 Traditional performances celebrating the construction of Hwaseong Fortress and the royal palace guard include Jultagi or tightrope walking, traditional music, farming music, dances and traditional activities.
